Angkor Wat and Angkor Archaeological Park (Siem Reap): This UNESCO World Heritage site is the undisputed crown jewel of Cambodia. Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world, is a must-see, especially at sunrise. The surrounding Angkor Thom complex, with its iconic Bayon Temple (known for its smiling faces) and Ta Prohm (where ancient ruins are intertwined with tree roots), offers a profound glimpse into the Khmer Empire’s architectural and artistic prowess. Siem Reap itself is a lively city with night markets, traditional Apsara dance shows, and a vibrant food scene.

Phnom Penh: The bustling capital city offers a blend of historical and modern attractions. Key sights include the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, and the National Museum of Cambodia. For a somber but important understanding of Cambodia’s past, visitors can visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. Bassac Lane is a popular spot for nightlife with eclectic bars and restaurants.

Koh Rong: An island paradise known for its powdery white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, perfect for snorkeling, diving, or simply relaxing. Koh Rong Samloem is a quieter alternative. Don’t miss the bioluminescent plankton at night.

Sihanoukville: A coastal city with beautiful beaches and offshore islands, ideal for water sports and beach relaxation.

Kep: A tranquil town known for its delicious pepper crab and relaxed atmosphere, with day trips to Rabbit Island.

Battambang: Often called the “artistic heart of Cambodia,” Battambang features well-preserved colonial buildings, art galleries, and the unique Bamboo Train ride.

Tonle Sap Lake: Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, home to fascinating floating villages that offer a glimpse into a unique way of life.

Kratie: A great place to escape the main tourist trail, known for its rare freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong River.

Cardamom Mountains: A haven for nature and wildlife enthusiasts, with opportunities to see elephants, gibbons, and leopards, and engage in community tourism projects.

The best time to visit Cambodia is generally during the dry season, from November to May.

Cool Season (November-February): This is the most popular time due to milder temperatures (around 21-30°C/70-86°F) and low rainfall, making it ideal for exploring temples and outdoor activities. However, expect larger crowds and higher prices for accommodation.

Hot Season (March-May): Temperatures can be extremely hot and humid, especially in April and May (up to 35°C/95°F). While good for beach activities, exploring temples can be taxing.

Wet (Monsoon) Season (May-October): While it rains frequently, the showers usually last for about an hour. The countryside transforms into a lush green landscape, and many hotels offer discounts. It can be a good time to visit if you don’t mind the rain and prefer fewer crowds.
